INSIDE THE RADIO STATION MAKING WAVES FROM A SHIPPING CONTAINER IN BROOKLYN

It is 9:30 on a Wednesday morning and selector Nina Bower is broadcasting on internet radio, playing a world music track that I cannot place. The song renders Shazam useless, and it feels safe to assume that it hasn’t before gotten much radio play. It is hard to believe that later today, Bronx duo The Martinez Brothers and legendary Studio 54 resident Nicky Siano will be spinning on the same decks that this pan flute sound is currently emanating from.

It’s even harder to believe that this entire operation is being run out of a shipping container placed on an otherwise empty lot in Brooklyn.

Opened in February at 17 Nassau Avenue, a prime plot of real-estate bordering Greenpoint and Williamsburg, The Lot Radio has established serious legitimacy in its two months of existence. The station’s founder, Belgium-born Francois Vaxelaire (pictured above), and his crew of four programmers have created both an online radio station and an inclusive IRL meeting place for both hardcore music aficionados and casual passersby.
